According to a probable cause affidavit, at approximately 2:40 p.m. on August 17, officers of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department responded to a call about a shooting that occurred at the apartment complex of the 3900 Building on South Johns Boulevard near Flamingo Road in Las Vegas. The caller — who was later identified as the victim’s daughter — told the dispatcher to “Hurry up,” adding, “He has a gun,” while the dispatcher said several gunshots could be heard in the background.
“There was a lot of commotion and screaming and (the daughter) seemed to get away from the phone,” the affidavit said. When she got back on the phone, she said her mother had died.”
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found two additional gunshot victims, in addition to Tamayo Cruz, who was pronounced dead at the scene. As for the other two injured, one of whom was shot in the elbow and the other with a bullet in the eye, they were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The affidavit named the suspect as Dorothy Mendoza, described as a “Cuban man” who “dressed all in white and fled the scene in a white pickup truck.”
Scene investigators recovered 11 cartridge cases from the scene and indicated that the apartment’s security door and front door had been “shot”. Tamayo Cruz’s body was found in the hallway between the apartment’s bedroom and bathroom. She had been fatally shot in the forehead. A 9 mm pistol was found next to the body.
At approximately 3:10 pm, cameras caught Dorothy Mendoza parking his car in front of the LVMPD records and fingerprint office and exiting wearing a T-shirt “covered in obvious blood”. He went inside, asked to speak with an officer, then went back outside and sat on one of the benches.
When the police approached, they noticed that his shirt was “soaked in obvious blood” and asked Dorothy Mendoza what had happened.
He responded, “You killed my wife.” Dorothy Mendoza also stated that his stepdaughter stabbed him in the left shoulder.
In an interview with the daughter, she told the police that she had been with her mother shortly before the shooting. During that time, her mother told her that she had won the court that day against Dorothy Mendoza and would get “the house, the truck, and custody of the kids.”
A witness who was in the house during the shooting told police that Dorothy Mendoza shot and kicked the bedroom door where his ex-wife was hiding and shot her in the head three times. He also said that Dorothy Mendoza said something to the effect of “I told you not to be kidding me”.
According to the affidavit, a two-year-old child, who was shared custody by Dorothy Mendoza and Tamayo Cruz, was in the apartment during the shooting and was not injured.
